Buying signals in South Africa: what 30 days of data show
Who hired, opened, advertised, won contracts and applied for licences in the 30 days to 22 October 2026, by province, from Pounce's nightly run.

Buying signals are the moments a business is about to spend: it won a contract, it is hiring, it opened a site, it started advertising, it applied for a licence. In the 30 days to 22 October 2026, Pounce recorded 1,938 hiring signals, 748 openings, 251 contract wins, 682 licence events, and 2,567 businesses advertising across South Africa. This is what they show.
How we count
A signal is one business, one event. Hiring is counted once per employer, per town, per week, however many jobs they posted, so a company advertising 40 roles in Midrand in one week is one hiring signal. Every signal records where and when it was seen: the tender or award register, the Government Gazette, the news, or Pounce’s proprietary data.
These are the signals Pounce found in public sources, not everything that happened. A business that hires through word of mouth or wins private work never shows up here.
Hiring leans on the Western Cape
Gauteng had the most hiring signals (727), then the Western Cape (527) and KwaZulu-Natal (280). Set against how many trading businesses each province has, the picture changes. Gauteng’s 727 come from about 90,000 businesses we hold there, roughly 0.8 signals per hundred businesses. The Western Cape’s 527 come from about 39,000: 1.4 per hundred, nearly twice Gauteng’s rate. KwaZulu-Natal sits at about 0.5 per hundred.
For anyone who sells to growing companies (recruitment, uniforms, office fit-outs, payroll, IT), the Western Cape had more hiring per business than any other province this month.
748 openings and new sites
Openings come mostly from Pounce’s proprietary data (600 of the 748), then news (83) and Government Gazette notices (65), often before the new site is listed anywhere else. Gauteng had 215, the Western Cape 159 and KwaZulu-Natal 155. A new branch needs shopfitting, signage, security, cleaning, connectivity and stock, usually from local suppliers chosen in a hurry.
251 published contract wins
Public contracts are the hardest signal there is: the award says who won, from whom and when, and sometimes for how much. KwaZulu-Natal (60), the Western Cape (56) and Gauteng (55) led. Every winner is about to buy materials, hire and subcontract, and many are contractors a sales team would never otherwise hear about.
Who advertises
2,567 businesses started or kept running online ads in the period (3,175 ad signals: some businesses appear more than once). Among those we can match to a business listing, hardware stores, car dealers, estate agents, clothing stores, restaurants and property managers advertised the most. A business that has started paying for ads has a marketing budget this month, which is the clearest buying signal there is for agencies, printers and anyone who sells to marketers.
682 licence events
Most are financial services firms on the FSCA register: firms applying for a licence, firms given an FSP number before they apply, and licences granted in the last four months. A financial firm being set up needs compliance software, insurance, office space and staff.
What this means if you sell to businesses
Thousands of these signals a month are visible to anyone who reads every register, notice and source every morning. Few sales teams do. Pounce does, and puts the ones that fit what you sell in your morning digest, with the business’s phone, email and the people who run it.
Figures from Pounce’s run of 22 October 2026. Provinces are where the signal happened; a few hundred signals have no province and are counted in the totals only.
